Dear Icing Colleagues,
We would like to invite your participation or attendance in the 3rd AIAA Ice Prediction Workshop (IPW-3), taking place online from Monday, September 21 through Thursday, September 24, 2026. Each session will run from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time across four half-days. The workshop is being organized by a committee of volunteers representing the AIAA Atmospheric and Space Environments Technical Committee, the SAE AC-9C Aircraft Icing Technology Committee and other organizations.
This is the third installment in a series of workshops designed to assess the current capabilities of 3D computational icing simulation tools and comparisons of ice shape results. The outcomes of previous IPW-1 and IPW-2 contributed to the formulation of IPW-3 with a significant focus on the verification and validation (V&V) of the computational workflows. Closely related to V&V is the establishment of methods and best practices for code-to-code and code-to-experiment ice shape comparisons, including the generation of quantitative methods for doing so.
IPW-3 will feature two distinct Technical Focus Groups (TFGs). The topic of TFG-1 is focused on the comparison of ice shape geometries derived from both codes and experiments. The topic of TFG-2 is a systematic verification and validation of computational tools. TFG-2 will utilize the outcomes of TFG-1 to enhance comparisons and evaluate comparator metrics.
We have a dedicated website where you can find more details regarding the test cases for IPW3 here.
If you would like to join in as a participant in order to run cases and compare results, please visit www.icepredictionworkshop.com and confirm your participation via email by sending an (empty) email to ipw-subscribe@itk.ntnu.no.
Information about workshop registration and other logistics will be provided on the AIAA website soon. We will send separate emails when this website is available.
If you are interested in attending the virtual only workshop (but not actively participate in running cases), please monitor future emails for updates as we get closer to the event.
Please feel free to pass this information on to any colleagues.
Thank you,
AIAA 3rd Ice Prediction Workshop Committee
